2nd June 2011
After an overnight flight to Frankfurt, and a 6 hour transit at Frankfurt airport we arrived in Istanbul at 4 pm their time. The airport was very busy and there were long lines to get visas, so we took a little over an hour to get through the airport and a further hour to get to our hotel by taxi.
The hotel is located in Sultanahmet, the old part of Istanbul and we have a good view of the Blue Mosque and are within walking distance of most of the things to see. Early impressions of Istanbul are very reminiscent of Asia.

We caught up with the Brian & Gail and Chris and Gwyneth soon after we arrived. Mark and Sue were still on their way from Dubai.
We set out at 7pm for a look around the neighbourhood and in search of somewhere for dinner. We met up with a local on the way who directed us down to his family’s restaurant down on the water overlooking the Hippodrome.

Just as we sat down we received a message from Mark, that they had arrived at the hotel. The guy from the restaurant volunteered to go up to the hotel and bring them back to the restaurant to join us.
Whist we waited we tried the local beer and soon after food just started arriving on the table, and lots of it. We had an enjoyable dinner, great food, drinkable wine and good beer.
